CHAOS CRU/SHER
toward resilience

For people with multiple overlapping chronic conditions, recovery isn't linear. You stabilize one thing and another flares. You try a protocol that works for someone else and it sets you back two months. CHAOS CRU/SHER is a three-stage framework for navigating that mess in the right order.

It's built for the patients I see most often: MCAS, SIBO, histamine intolerance, and CIRS, often stacked on top of each other. The framework names the three stages of recovery and what belongs in each one.

Why recovery from complex chronic illness stalls

The standard experience looks like this. You get one diagnosis. You start a protocol. Something else flares. You try something new. It works for a week, then it doesn't. You spend months or years in trial and error, with more supplements in your cupboard than your provider could name, and no clear sense of whether anything is actually helping.

The problem is rarely that the individual interventions are wrong. The problem is the order. Recovery from layered chronic conditions follows stages. Skipping ahead, or trying to do everything at once, is what stalls progress and triggers flares.

What you'll walk away with

By the end of the course, you will be able to:

  • Recognize which stage you're in, and what that stage calls for.
  • See why treating a chronic illness like a linear protocol keeps failing.
  • Use the three-stage framework as a map you can come back to as your picture changes.
  • Have shared language for talking with your provider about where you are.
  • Keep the CHAOS CRU/SHER poster on hand as a one-page reference.

How the course is structured

Three stages, with orientation, a framework poster, and optional assessments for patients and clinicians.

  1. 01

    Orientation

Welcome, course structure, and the disclaimers that set the scope. This is education, not a treatment plan.

  2. 02

    Stage 1: CHAOS

The reactive, early phase. What's driving the instability, and what care looks like while your body is still in overwhelm.

  3. 03

    Stage 2: CRU

The recovery phase. Moving from surviving to rebuilding. What shifts when you've stabilized enough to start the repair work.

  4. 04

    Stage 3: SHER

Long-term resilience. What it looks like to not just be less reactive, but to live a full life again.

  5. 05

    Integration

Concluding remarks, the CHAOS CRU/SHER poster for at-a-glance reference, and optional assessments for patient and clinician use.

Who's teaching

I'm Dr. Joyce Knieff, a naturopathic physician in Minnesota. My clinical focus is MCAS, motility disorders, hormones, and the ugly overlap between them.

CHAOS CRU/SHER is the framework I use in clinic, translated into a format you can work through on your own time. It's the thing I'd want my patients to have read before we meet for the first time.

More about Dr. Joyce

I am absolutely mind blown. You are the only person I have ever seen who has explained this and made complete sense.

@marierie451

Followed every sentence with you. I always learn something. This was helpful and encouraging.

@suz_60

I'm so glad to listen to you. I started working with a Naturopathic Dr. and after testing my gut biome, this is the same track she has me on.

Questions people ask

  • Is this medical advice?

No. CHAOS CRU/SHER is educational. It is not a diagnosis, not a treatment plan, and not a substitute for working with a provider who knows your history. The course helps you see structure and sequence. Your provider does the rest.

  • I'm reacting to everything. Is this too early for me?

Probably not. Stage 1 (CHAOS) is specifically for the reactive, early-flare state. You can stay with it as long as you need before moving on. The course is built for people who can't tolerate much, because that is who most people are when they start.

  • I don't have a formal MCAS or SIBO diagnosis. Can I still use this?

Yes. The framework doesn't assume a specific diagnosis. It assumes you have overlapping chronic symptoms and the usual protocol approach hasn't been enough.

  • How long does it take to complete?

Self-paced. Most people work through it in a couple of sittings, then revisit sections as their picture changes. The goal isn't completion, it is having a map you can come back to.

  • Can I buy this on its own?

Yes. CHAOS CRU/SHER is $27 as a standalone. A Wayfarer membership ($32/mo) also includes it plus every other course in the library, which makes sense once you're using more than one.

Start with a clearer map.

You don't need more protocols. You need to know which stage you're in, and what that stage requires. CHAOS CRU/SHER gives you that.
